ROVERS CLIMB OFF CANVAS FOR A POINT

Rochedale Rovers 2   Souths United  2

Local derbies often fail to live up to the hype but this one certainly delivered. Both sets of players and coaching staff are to be congratulated for serving up a game that delivered endeavour, commitment, passion and quality in spades.  In the after match wash up both coaches will have plenty to be pleased about whilst also having plenty of coaching points for during the week given that both teams scored twice but didn't win.

Rochedale once again were slow out of the blocks and were fortunate not to find themselves behind in the opening minute when Grimley found himself with plenty of space and  the ball at his feet, fortunately for the Rovers he blazed high and wide when he should have done better.  A few minutes later the dangerous Omerovic threw another scare at the home team when he shot narrowly wide with Carroll struggling.

10 minutes in Njie was released inside the Souths box but the normally reliable striker was surprisingly wasteful and blasted Rovers first chance high and wide, proving more dangerous to competitors on the neighbouring BMX track than the Souths keeper.  The game continued at a frantic pace with many shots from distance and plenty of tasty tackles that kept the officials from getting bored.

Just a couple of minutes before the break the lively Ethan Grimley was to make amends for his earlie miss when he finished an excellent passing move with an emphatic finish to ensure that the men from Runcorn went to the sheds with their noses in front.

The second half started where the first left off, with both teams going hammer and tongs for the win.  10 minutes in South went close to stretching their lead when Grimley cleverly provided Omerovic with a shooting chance, the big midfielder stung the palms of Carroll who saved well.  Rochedale were doing their share of attacking as well but apart from an Njie header that came off the face of the crossbar they struggled to unzip a resolute Souths defence.

Just on the hour mark there was a collectors item when Aoci missed an absolute sitter  missing the target from right in front 2 yards out,one wag suggested that it probably needed more skill to miss than it would have taken to score.  That was Aoci's last meaningful involvement as just a minute later he was invited to watch the rest of the game sitting next to the coach.
3 minutes later Ethan Grimley showed how it should be done when he fired high into the net to score his and Souths second goal.

As the game entered the last 20 minutes it was hard to see a way back for Rovers but then that was without taking into account the incredible fighting spirit that came to the fore time and again last year in Rovers glorious run to the title.
As Rovers pushed even harder in pursuit of an unlikely comeback,  Souths who had previously looked reasonably assured started to look rattled and the home support sensed that all may not be lost after all.  With 15 minutes left opportunity knocked for Rovers when a hand ball in the penalty box saw Sam Fellows step up to the penalty spot and play a 0ne Two with the keeper before bundling the ball over the line to cut Souths advantage in half.

Rovers were in the ascendancy now and Souths looked increasingly nervous.  As the game entered the last 10 minutes Rovers were not knocking on the door, they were hammering at it and Souths were coming apart at the seams committing numerous fouls in their desperate attempts to hang on.

It appeared only a matter of time before Souths would be punished from a free kick and eventually they were,
A free kick from wide was delivered once again in the danger zone but unlike the countless others that had been expertly dealt with this one wasn't, the Souths defenders couldn't get a clearing boot on the ball and up popped Kai Halliday to play the unlikely role of goalscoring hero as he smashed the ball through the crowd to gain a point for Rovers.

A draw is not the result either team was looking for but in the end they may be happy with what they got,Souths were looking good at 2 nil but there is no doubt they were staggering at the end and Rochedale looked out of it at 2 nil but showed tremendous courage to get a point that could prove important.

Souths assistant coach Gerry Sutherland said:
"It was a fiery local derby.  Good game, probably a decent result.  At 2 up we started giving the ball away in bad areas and we were put under pressure"

Rovers coach Scott McNicoll said:
"Pleased to get a point and showing great Character after being 2 down.Really disappointed with the way we conceded the second goal, once again turning the ball over in a bad area in midfield.Thought we really over ran them in the last 20 minutes but they dug in well and fought hard.  It may be a crucial point gained in the end."
