FQPL - Loganholme Lightning 2 - 3 Rovers

DEADLY BEN SEALS IT FOR ROVERS AT THE DEATH.
Ben Njie
Games between Rochedale and Loganholme are not normally for the faint hearted and this latest installment was no different. We had goals, red and yellow cards, controversy and incidents galore during a pulsating 90+ minutes of football.

From the kick off both teams made it clear that victory was their only objective and this turned out to be a high tempo attack fest from start to finish. Loganholme opened brightly and carved out the first clear cut chance but failed to hit the target from close in at the back post on ten minutes. Just two minutes later Rovers showed how it should have been done when Andy Coyne converted from a similar position after fine work from Sam Fellows.

The game continued at a frantic pace with openings at both ends of the pitch, but there was no alteration to the score until the 25th minute when a brilliant free kick from Richard Greer came back of the crossbar to be tapped home by Steven Green who reacted quickest.

In the 30th minute all hell broke loose when Rovers Jon McKain launched himself into a tackle right in front of the Loganholme technical area.Straight away every one of the Loganholme personel inside that area reacted angrily with many of them entering the field of play to remonstrate with McKain and referee Eldridge. An angry melee ensued with lots of pushing, shoving, angry words and people acting tough.
Eldridge after consulting his assistant showed a red card to McKain.

Loganholme who were causing Rovers plenty of problems before the red card scored again in the 40th minute when Jed Brown finished off a fine move that involved Steven Green and Zander Guy.

The second half was 10 minutes old when we had the next flashpoint with episode 2 of Men Behaving Badly the outcome of which saw the hosts relinquish their numerical player advantage when Ref. Eldridge again after a long consultation with his assistant issue a red card to a home player. Rovers Sam Fellows was given a yellow card to accompany the 4cm scratch to his face received in the unsavoury incident.

Matters were made worse for Loganholme almost straight away when calamitous defending presented Ben Njie with a one on one chance to equalise. The striker stared down the Loganholme custodian before finishing with ease to level the scores.

Loganholme were stung by this double setback but produced a sustained spell of attacking football that saw them pin Rovers back and really bing the best out of Tom Carroll in the Rovers goal. Time and again Carroll stood firm and refused to let anything past him and along with determined scrapping from his defenders they repelled the Loganholme attacks.

Just when it looked like the spoils were going to be shared up popped episode 3 of Men Behaving Badly with a Red card again being produced and Loganholme being reduced to 9 players. The dismissed player was still accepting the cheers from a section of home support who felt that a red card was something to be celebrated, when when Rovers prolific talisman Njie snatched the game away from them with a superb strike from a narrow angle.

He received the ball close to the goal line and wriggled free of a challenge before smashing the ball past Tubbs at his near post.
That was almost the last kick of the game but there was time for episode 4 of Men Behaving Badly when the officials were ambushed by players and coaching staff interested in debating some of the decisions before they could leave the field.

All in all it was just what you would expect from this fixture.
Loganholme will probably feel they deserved more reward for some of the attacking football they played but may also feel that discipline let them down.

Rovers again showed that they are capable of staying in and picking up things from games even when backs are to the wall.
This fixture is never usually pretty and today was no exception but Rovers produced the performance required, something they did time and again last year when winning the title and a proud Scott McNicoll whilst acknowledging the graft put in by his charges also highlighted the fact that there were improvements in terms of quality by many individuals as well.
