FQPL Round 6 -Tom terrific wins it for Rovers.

Young wingback Tommy Ross came off the bench to calmly capitalise on a rare defensive error from a resolute Mitchelton backline and help Rovers once again come out on top in another tight one.  The Rochedale ground staff did a remarkable job to produce a surface fit for play when so many grounds round Brisbane were unable to cope with the recent heavy rain.  That said the underfoot heavy conditions along with the determined and desperate defensive efforts of both teams meant that this contest was always going to be more about graft than craft but defending is a skill of the game that is often overlooked and both teams  gave their all in that department.

Mitchelton started the game quickly forcing a corner in the first minute and opened Rovers up a few times to create a few half chances early doors.  There was an early scare for Rovers when keeper Tom Carroll found himself in a sliding tackle with Peter Drager when having to clean up a back pass that was under hit.  Carroll needed treatment but fortunately for Rovers he was able to continue.  The same 2 players were involved in an almost identical situation 15 minutes later but this time the brave keeper came through the tackle unscathed.

After the bright start by Mitchelton Rovers worked their way into the game and started to hold their own in the possession stakes but as previously mentioned this was a game where defence stood out.  The last 2 significant moments of the half came firstly on the half hour when Carroll inexplicably passed the ball straight to Drager on the edge of the Rovers box,the Mitchie striker rounded Carroll but was forced a little wide and fired into the side net with the goal open.  The second incident came just minutes before half time when Rovers created a clear opening for Njie but just as the prolific marksmen was about to pull the trigger he was thwarted by a magnificent sliding tackle.  The teams went in at 0-0 at half time and that did justice to the defensive efforts of both teams.

Rovers came out of the blocks in a hurry in the second half and forced no less than 6 corners in the opening 10 minutes.

Despite the excellent delivery by young Will Eaton Rovers were unable to convert into goals. After the early onslaught the game reverted back the arm wrestle of earlier.  Mitchie keeper Ben Sonter foiled Rochedale brilliantly firstly diving low down to his right to thwart Jason Tobin and then minutes later getting high up to his left to tip over a stinging effort from Todd Norris.

Rovers custodian Carroll then had a chance to show his capabilities when in the 66th minute Mitchelton were awarded a chance to take the lead from the penalty spot.  Carroll pulled off a superb save diving to his left to save the effort off Jordan Dozzi only to see the ref order a retake as punishment for encroachment by Rovers defenders.  Dozzi didn't fancy another go so up stepped substitute Chris Bacon. The result was identical with Carroll again diving to his left to save and keep the teams locked together on the scoreboard.

The pace of the game showed no let up with both teams going flat out for a win and both sets of defences showing fantastic commitment the cause.  Just when the game looked finishing in a stalemate in the 84th minute a diagonal ball was fired in from Rochedale's right hand side and for once the stoic Mitchie defence failed to deal with the situation and the ball skidded through to Tom Ross on the left who had only entered the field of play minutes earlier, and he calmly controlled the ball before firing magnificently high to the keepers left.  It was going to take something special to beat the excellent Sonter and that was produced by the young Rovers wide player.

If the Rochedale supporters thought that was job done then they were in for a shock as the gutsy Mitchelton team threw everything they had at the home team to try and get something from the game.Rochedale were superbly marshalled by Jon McKain in this frantic last 10 minutes, including 4 minutes stoppage time that felt like 40 minutes to the Rochedale faithful, but were almost undone in the last minute when a shot was fired through the crowded Rovers goalmouth and just when everyone expected to see the ball nestling in the back of the net,up popped midfielder Andy Coyne to clear off the line and make sure Rovers picked up the 3 points they fought so hard for.

Again there will be another team coming away from a game with Rovers feeling that they perhaps should have got more but it has to be more than a coincidence that Rochedale aare able to time and again come out on top in these close battles. They have battling qualities second to none and enjoy nothing better than a contest.  Today in what was a contest where defences were on top they were magnificently organised at the back by McKain and fought all over the park for every ball.

Both coaches were kind enough to give their time to offer their thoughts after the game,

Mitchelton F.C. coach Daniel Pennisi said

"I thought we started well and stayed with it.We were fully committed and battled hard to stay in this game.  Key moments are crucial in football and key moments didn't go in our favour tonight. We had to chances to take the lead from the penalty spot with around 20 to go and couldn't convert, then with 5 to go after defending well all night we were caught out by a diagonal ball that we could have dealt with much better and were punished, and again with almost the last kick we beat the keeper but it was cleared off the line.

Where we are on the table I don't believe is where we should be,we have played a lot of the more fancied teams in the comp.and have been really competitive and I feel if a few things go our way we will improve our spot.  Our squad tonight had an average age just over 20 and that's good for the club.  I'm disappointed about tonight's result but confident about the future."

Rochedale Rovers coach Scott McNicoll said

"I was pleased with our communication and organisation tonight.I thought that was a big improvement from last week.

The hunger and determination to win contests was also a big improvement.I asked for more desperation this week and think that the guys responded well.

Mitchelton played well to their strengths which was obviously getting it quickly to their tall strong men up front but we dealt with that and I felt we controlled the game for long periods and I was happy with the way we played our new shape.  Again really pleased about picking up the points in a tight game. Mitchie made it hard."
